Saving the tooth from the inside out
Your teeth are more than enamel and dentin. Inside each tooth, soft tissue surrounds and protects the nerve that runs down through the root. Endodontics is the branch of dental care focused on treating that inner tissue when infection or injury puts it - and the tooth itself - at risk.
When decay is caught early, a simple filling is often all that is needed. If decay spreads past the outer layers and reaches that inner tissue, a more involved endodontic procedure becomes the best path to keeping the natural tooth.
Why keeping your natural tooth matters
A natural tooth looks, feels, and functions in ways that a prosthetic replacement simply cannot fully replicate. Saving it through endodontic treatment is also frequently less involved - and requires fewer visits - than the process of extracting and replacing a tooth with a prosthetic. In the most advanced cases, where decay has caused an abscess at the root tip and the infection has been allowed to spread, extraction may become the only remaining option. That is why early care makes such a difference.
What root canal therapy involves
Root canal therapy is the most common endodontic procedure. It works by thoroughly cleaning infected tissue out of all of a tooth's root canals, stopping the decay from spreading any further. Because teeth vary in shape - some roots are narrow or unusually curved - the complexity of the procedure can vary from case to case.
General dentists are trained to perform routine root canals. For more complex cases, they often refer patients to endodontists: specialists who complete at least two additional years of focused training and work with advanced technology to handle both routine and difficult situations with greater precision.
How endodontic needs are discovered
Some people notice symptoms - lingering sensitivity to hot or cold, discomfort, swelling, or a change in the color of a tooth - that prompt a conversation with their dentist. Others have no noticeable symptoms at all. In many cases, the need for endodontic treatment is identified through digital imaging and exams during a regular hygiene appointment, which is one more reason those routine visits matter.
-
Focused on your comfort
Endodontists receive specific training in anesthetics so that the procedure is as comfortable as it can be - root canal therapy is designed to relieve pain, not cause it.
-
Skilled at complex cases
Advanced training and technology allow endodontists to work confidently on roots that are narrow, curved, or otherwise difficult to treat with general instruments alone.
-
Diagnosing difficult pain
Endodontists are also trained to identify the source of pain in the mouth and face that may be hard for other dental or medical professionals to pinpoint.
