A thin layer of porcelain, a noticeably different smile
A veneer is a thin strip of porcelain placed over the front surface of a tooth. Because porcelain can be color-matched closely to your surrounding teeth, a finished veneer tends to blend right in. Unlike a crown, which wraps the entire tooth, a veneer leaves the bulk of your natural tooth structure intact - which is why we consider it our most conservative restoration.
The process starts with a detailed smile assessment. We talk through what you like and what you would like to change, then discuss which options make sense for your smile before anything else happens.
What to expect across your appointments
Getting a veneer takes at least two visits. Here is how the process generally unfolds at Sendero Dental Studio.
-
First visit - tooth preparation
The dentist removes a very small amount of front enamel - usually less than one millimeter - using a dental bur. Removing as little enamel as possible helps the veneer bond well to the outer tooth structure. Depending on how much enamel needs to come off, local anesthesia may not be required.
-
First visit - impressions
After the tooth is prepared, we take a precise impression of your teeth. A small retraction cord temporarily moves the gum line so the mold captures every detail. You will also bite into a tray of paste to complete the mold. The finished impression goes to a dental lab, where your personalized veneer is crafted over the next couple of weeks.
-
In between - temporary coverage
If a significant amount of enamel was removed - making the tooth more sensitive or prone to damage - we may place a temporary veneer to protect it while your permanent one is being made. Not every patient needs this step.
Placing and securing your permanent veneer
At your final appointment, the dentist fits your custom veneer, making any adjustments needed so it looks right and feels comfortable. We encourage you to share any concerns at this stage - we want you to be fully satisfied before anything is permanently attached.
Once the fit is confirmed, the tooth is coated with bonding cement and the veneer is attached. A special blue light hardens the cement and locks the veneer in place. After one last fit check, you are ready to go. With proper care - including following any food guidelines we give you and wearing a night guard if you grind your teeth - a veneer can last over ten years.
