Teeth Whitening

Staining from coffee, tea, red wine, and tobacco can dull even the most diligent smile. At Sendero Dental Studio in Rancho Mission Viejo, we offer both in-office and custom take-home whitening to help you get back the brightness you want.

Why Teeth Lose Their Brightness Over Time

Age and genetics play a role in tooth color, but everyday habits tend to have the biggest impact. Beverages like coffee, tea, cola, and red wine are among the most common causes of surface staining, and tobacco use can push teeth from yellow to brown or even gray. Even a consistent brushing and flossing routine may not be enough to reverse that kind of buildup.

Whitening works by reaching into the hard outer layer of the tooth -- the enamel -- and breaking apart the compounds that cause discoloration. Not every type of stain responds to whitening, so understanding which option fits your situation is an important first step.

In-Office Whitening: What to Expect at Your Visit

Our in-office whitening uses a higher-concentration peroxide gel than anything available over the counter, which is why it can produce more noticeable results in a single appointment that runs roughly one to one-and-a-half hours.

At the start of your appointment, we record your current tooth color so you can see the change clearly at the end. We then protect your lips, tongue, and gums using a rubber dam or a hardening liquid, along with a cheek retractor that keeps your soft tissue clear of the whitening gel. The gel is applied in a few cycles of 15 to 30 minutes each, and we check progress between each one. Some patients notice a slight color shift in the first day or two after the appointment as their teeth rehydrate -- this is a normal part of the process. Where helpful, we send you home with a set of take-home trays to maintain your results.

Who Is a Good Candidate for In-Office Whitening?

In-office whitening is not the right fit for everyone. If you have been diagnosed with gum disease or experience sensitive teeth, the stronger peroxide concentration used in-office may not be appropriate for you -- a custom take-home kit with a lower concentration is often a better path. Whitening of any kind also cannot change the color of crowns, veneers, or bonded restorations, and teeth with brown or gray staining tend to respond less predictably than teeth that have yellowed. In those situations, alternatives such as veneers or crowns may be worth discussing with us.

Custom Take-Home Trays: Whitening at Your Own Pace

If over-the-counter kits have left you underwhelmed, a custom tray made from an impression of your own teeth makes a meaningful difference. Because the tray is shaped exactly to your mouth, it reaches areas store-bought strips tend to miss and sits securely enough to prevent gel from leaking onto your gums -- a common source of irritation with drugstore options.

Once your trays are ready, we select a peroxide gel strength suited to your needs. You fill the trays with gel and wear them for around two to four hours each day; the full course typically runs two to four weeks, and many people notice a change within the first two weeks. If you experience tooth sensitivity or gum irritation at any point, stop use and contact us right away. Please note that any necessary dental work -- such as cleanings or fillings -- will need to be completed before you begin take-home whitening.

Take-Home Whitening: Candidacy Considerations

As with in-office whitening, take-home gels work on natural tooth enamel only. Discoloration that originates inside the tooth -- such as staining that can follow a root canal -- will not respond to peroxide-based treatment. Crowns, veneers, and bonded teeth are similarly unaffected. If whitening gel is not the right solution for your teeth, we are glad to talk through other options with you.
